Starting year: 2024

Short description: In partnership with Swiss bank Julius Bär, we are reforesting this area to sequester large amounts of CO2. The project borders the Indigenous territory Emberá

Wounaan, acting as a critical buffer to protect existing natural forests in this area.

In partnership with Swiss bank Julius Bär, we are reforesting this area to sequester large amounts of CO2. The area was gradually reforested over the last 15 years through expansion of the agricultural frontier and used for cattle ranching.

The project borders the Indigenous territory Emberá-Wounaan. A few km to the north is another important indigenous territory, Guna de Wargandi. Couched between the above-mentioned indigenous territories, which still contain a high percentage of natural forests, the project zone can play a key role and ecological connectivity. The project is a potential cornerstone for a more extensive forest restoration initiative or ‘Green Bridge’ in the area, which would help to limit further encroachment into surrounding forests, securing and increasing the connectivity between remaining forest ecosystems, and offering sustainable income and development opportunities for neighbouring indigenous communities.
